Teagan and the 2009 World Special Olympics
February 10, 2009
Boise is host city to the 2009 World Winter Special Olympics currently underway. I was lucky to be selected a "festival" volunteer where the fans, athletes and donors come together for celebration of the games. One of my favorite encounters was a little boy with an intellectual disability named Teagan. I was taken by his enthusiasm for the event, but even more so by his friendliness and open heart...his ability to smile broadly and easily...his freedom to take a stranger's hand and melt them within seconds. Teagan's beautiful emotions were contagious, and in fact the overall feel of the event is the same way. Thousands of people gathering together with like energy (I like to call it "love") which has left me thinking about the impact we make daily on our own sphere, be it with love or a contagion of negativity.
One of my favorite authors, Leo Buscaglia, has penned some incredible thoughts and insights on the topic of love. In fact, I highly recommend his little book entitled, "Love" or another, "Living, Loving & Learning" to inspire your inner love voice.
Remember, smile broadly, reach out to others and keep an open heart. Not only will it make others feel better during these stressful global times, but you, too. And you don't have to be a Special Olympian!

thanks for the love you shared at the Festival, the Games and every day in your life as you teach our children the love of music. The more I learn about you, I learn we have more in common than I innitially thought...I also love Leo Buscaglia..read his books in high school and they have stayed with me since. thanks for reminding me of his inspiring approach to life!
